For 100 years, Brown Ledge Camp has been a place where girls grow in independence, confidence, and joy on the shores of Malletts Bay. As we celebrate our Centennial in 2026, we honor a remarkable legacy, a devoted community, and a mission that remains just as important today as it was in 1926.
Each summer, campers arrive eager to learn new skills, meet new bunkies, and build friendships that last a lifetime. Guided by dedicated staff and enthusiastic junior counselors, they challenge themselves through Basics, Intermediates, and Vanguards, discovering strengths they never knew they possessed.
While much has changed over the past century, Brown Ledge's founding principles have not. In a world where young people face increasing pressures from technology, academics, and social media, the opportunity to unplug, build confidence, develop resilience, and become part of a caring community has never been more valuable.
To ensure Brown Ledge continues to transform lives for generations to come, we launched the Brown Ledge Centennial Campaign, a $4 million effort to strengthen Camp's future by investing in three critical areas:
Behind every memorable Brown Ledge summer is an extraordinary property that requires year-round care and investment. With 26 acres, nearly 100 buildings, and 18 departments, maintaining Brown Ledge means far more than repairing cabins, it means protecting the infrastructure that makes camp possible. Adding to this challenge is a quickly emerging reality: climate change. Increasingly severe storms, extreme heat, smoke drifting from distant forest fires, and heavy rain runoff all have the ability to impact our summer operations dramatically.
To ensure the perpetuation of Brown Ledge, we must plan with intention and face these challenges head-on. Now is the time to invest in the future of Camp. During the summer of 2025, Brown Ledge engaged consultants to assess the entire property. Their work produced a nearly 400-page comprehensive survey of the current state of our buildings, short and long-term needs, a detailed topography map, and environmental factors.
With an investment of $1,000,000 into a Capital Improvement Fund, Brown Ledge will have the flexibility to proactively plan, address urgent repairs, and undertake major renovations years in advance.
Growing Brown Ledge’s operational endowment is critical to our long-term financial sustainability. A strong endowment not only ensures we can invest in exceptional staff and continually enhance the camper experience, but also provides us the flexibility and stability to withstand challenges like an unexpected world event, a season of low enrollment, or a winter of bad weather.
In today’s increasingly competitive job and summer camp market, it is paramount that we continue to invest in our program and hire qualified, experienced staff to ensure Brown Ledge always stands out. A safe, well-run program, high-quality equipment, and knowledgeable staff are essential to delivering an exceptional experience. Having additional income from the endowment allows Brown Ledge to achieve these goals, offset tuition increases, and maintain its standard of excellence that has defined us for 100 years. Endowment funds are permanently invested, and only a portion of the annual earnings is used each year. This creates a reliable, sustainable source of income that supports Brown Ledge year after year while preserving the principal for future generations.
Brown Ledge is indebted to Jane Parke Batten (camper 1949-1953), who made a matching challenge of $1,000,000 to establish the Scholarship Endowment. Thanks to Jane's remarkable $1 million matching challenge, every contribution made toward the Scholarship Endowment today creates twice the opportunity for future campers.
We all know how transformative the Brown Ledge experience can be. One of the greatest joys of Camp is its vibrant, high-spirited community. Our campers come from across the United States and around the world, bringing diverse backgrounds and experiences. At Brown Ledge, campers meet new people they might never have known and form friendships that last a lifetime.
We have always strived to keep Camp as affordable as possible, ensuring that every child who wants to attend has the opportunity to benefit from a Brown Ledge summer. While our tuition remains at or below that of our peers, residential summer camp is inherently expensive, and operating expenses continue to rise. One of the most effective ways to maintain affordable tuition is through investing in our scholarship program. By dedicating an endowment specifically to scholarships, Brown Ledge secures a reliable income source to fund this program, which in turn supports enrollment and frees up resources to sustain and grow the summer experience for all.

Help Unlock Jane Batten's $1 Million Gift
Brown Ledge has received a transformational $1,000,000 matching challenge from Jane Parke Batten (Camper 1949–1953) to establish our permanent Scholarship Endowment.
To unlock Jane's gift, our community must raise the remaining $239,193 by December 31, 2026, which would release $1,000,000 to our campaign!
Every dollar contributed toward the Scholarship Endowment will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling its impact and helping ensure that future generations of campers can experience Brown Ledge regardless of financial circumstances.
